Internet Crime Complaint Center Law and Legal Definition
The Internet Crime Complaint Center is a task force established as a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) to receive internet related criminal complaints. It is also known as the IC3. Formerly, the IC3 was known as the Internet Fraud Complaint Center. It was renamed as Internet Crime Complaint Center in October 2003. IC3's mission is to serve as a vehicle to receive, develop, and refer criminal complaints regarding the rapidly expanding arena of cyber crime.
The IC3 acts as a central hub to receive, further research, develop, refer the criminal complaints to federal, state, local, or international law enforcement and/or regulatory agencies for any investigation they deem proper. The IC3 helps the federal, state, local, and international agencies that work to combat internet crime.
The IC3 receives complaints on matters such as online extortion, international money laundering, identity theft, online fraud on intellectual property rights matters, computer hacking, and economic espionage (theft of trade secrets).
